A fragile truce between Israel and Islamic militant factions in Gaza that has ended 5 days of fighting appears to have held through the weekend. The ceasefire formally took effect at 10:00 pm local time Saturday night.

For the past 5 days, hundreds of rockets have been launched from the Gaza Strip, primarily by the Palestinian Islamic Jihad (PIJ) group, which has resulted in large-scale airstrikes from Israel. The fighting has left 34 Palestinians dead and at least one Israeli was killed and several others injured when a rocket hit an apartment building.

According to the official ceasefire agreement, "In the light of the agreement of the Palestinian and the Israeli side, Egypt announces a ceasefire between the Palestinian and the Israeli side has been reached."

"The two sides will abide by the ceasefire which will include an end to targeting civilians, house demolition, and end to targeting individuals immediately when the ceasefire goes into effect," the agreement added.

The deal, which was brokered by Egypt has lasted more than a full 24 hours and the Islamic Jihad released a statement saying, "We declare our acceptance of the Egyptian announcement and we will abide by it as long as the occupation [Israel] abides by it."

As the ceasefire held on Sunday, life slowly began to return to normal on both sides of the Gaza Strip, with Israel reopening its goods and commercial border crossings. Crowds returned to barren streets as shops began to reopen.

According to UN officials, the 5 days of fighting is the worst conflict the region has seen since a 10-day war in 2021. Israel's massive airstrikes on Gaza destroyed more than 50 homes and displaced over 950 people.

As the ceasefire enters its second day, local authorities have reported that 190 Palestinians were wounded in the fighting with an estimated 30 Israelis injured while seeking cover during rocket attacks.
