Latest exchange of blows between Israel and Iran points the way to a larger, less covert conflict.
Recent Israeli attacks on Iranian interests in Syria and on the Syrian anti-aircraft systems that tried to thwart them came in response to an unprecedented Iranian attack on Israel via a medium-range ground to ground missile. The Israeli retaliation was unusual in its scope, in its willingness to prove wrong Russia’s claim of operational deployment of S-300 anti-aircraft systems in Syria, and in Israel’s contemporaneous admission of prosecuting the attacks. Taken as a whole, the Iranian attack and the Israeli counter strike can be viewed as the opening salvo in the long-dreaded full-scale Israeli-Iranian war.
