Vladimir Putin jokes with the head of Crimean Jewry about funds needed to complete a new synagogue
During a recent visit to the Crimean peninsula, which most of the world views as Ukrainian territory under Russian occupation, Russian president Vladimir Putin held court and received progress reports form various bodies and agencies. Among them, was the head of the Crimean Jewry Benjamin Wolf, who reported that the completion of the new synagogue in Crimea was delayed due to financial difficulties. “You mean to tell me that the Jews have run out of money?” quipped Putin. “This can surely only happen in Crimea.”

Russian media report that the joke was taken as such and the Jewish vizier promised Putin that the synagogue will be completed by year’s end.
