Saturday morning, an Egyptian police officer crossed the border between Egypt and Israel and initially killed two Israel Defense Force soldiers manning an outpost. The yet to be named soldiers included on male and an one female. The attack occurred between Mount Sagi and Mount Harif in the Negev.
During the hunt for the attacker, IDF forces engaged and killed the Egyptian infiltrator, but one Israeli soldier was killing, and another wounded in the exchange of fire. While it is likely the attacker killed in the second incident was the same police officer involved in the initial incident, IDF forces are continuing to search the area for additional possible infiltrators.
Israeli authorities are investigating the attack and as yet are uncertain of the motivation of the Egyptian. The border between Egypt and Israel has been relatively quiet since the 1979 Peace Treaty, and this is one of the most serious incidents since.
