Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has cancelled a delegation to Washington to discuss the war against Hamas. This was done on the heels of America abstaining from a vote in the UN Security Council demanding a ceasefire during Ramadan, the Muslim holiday.

Israel has vowed to enter Rafah, the Hamas stronghold in the Gaza Strip, with or without American help.

Netanyahu’s press release on the incident is below.

After the UN Security Council’s decision this evening and the cancellation of the delegation to the USA, Minister Benny Gantz published the following announcement:

“The State of Israel has a moral obligation to continue fighting until the abductees are returned and the threat of Hamas is removed and that is what we will do, reported independent pro-Israel journalist Amir Tsarfati.

The Security Council’s decision has no operational significance for us, and in any case, we will continue to listen to our friendships, and we will always do what is right for Israel’s security… It is good that the Defense Minister is now in the US, and will discuss with senior administration officials the political and security issues at hand and our need to continue fighting.

Not only is it right for the delegation to travel – the Prime Minister would do well if he himself traveled to the USA, and held a direct dialogue with President Biden and the senior administration officials. This is true routinely, and it is certainly true now, when the weight of US support for Israel is so critical.’

Shortly after, the Prime Minister’s Office published its response to Gantz’s words, according to which:

“After Hamas welcomed the Security Council’s decision that passed with the US abstaining, Benny Gantz is proposing tonight to send a delegation to the US. Prime Minister Netanyahu rejected his proposal.”

The United States has abandoned its policy in the UN today. Just a few days ago, it supported a Security Council resolution that linked a call for a ceasefire to the release of hostages.

China and Russia vetoed that resolution partly because they opposed a ceasefire that was linked to the release of hostages. Yet today, Russia and China joined Algeria and others in supporting the new resolution precisely because it had no such linkage.

Regrettably, the United States did not veto the new resolution, which calls for a ceasefire that is not contingent on the release of hostages.

This constitutes a clear departure from the consistent US position in the Security Council since the beginning of the war.

Today’s resolution gives Hamas hope that international pressure will force Israel to accept a ceasefire without the release of our hostages, thus harming both the war effort and the effort to release the hostages.

Prime Minister Netanyahu made it clear last night that should the US depart from its principled policy and not veto this harmful resolution, he will cancel the Israeli delegation’s visit to the United States. In light of the change in the US position, PM Netanyahu decided that the delegation will remain in Israel.
