UPDATE:

Axios reports that the target was a secret underground rocket factory/facility built and maintained by Iran.

The IDF’s Tier 1 Sayeret Matkal unit conducted the raid, surprised and killed the Syrian guards, and then used explosives to completely destroy the underground facility from the inside. This was all done under heavy air cover from the Israeli Air Force, who prevented any reinforcements from approaching the site while forces were still on the ground.

The U.S. was notified of the operation beforehand and did not oppose it. Ravid writes that “the destruction of the factory appears to be a significant blow to an effort by Iran and Hezbollah to produce precision medium-range missiles on Syrian soil.”

Axios reported that Iran began building this secret underground facility in coordination with Hezbollah and the Assad government in 2018 after dozens of Israeli airstrikes (from 2016-2018) destroyed most, if not all, of the Iranian missile production facilities and stockpiles in Syria.

The Iranians selected the area around Masyaf in Syria due to its mountainous terrain and perceived impenetrability to Israeli air strikes. The facility was built deep into a mountain, similar to how the Iranians constructed some of their nuclear facilities.

More details on the Israeli special forces raid last week near Masyaf in Syria:

Israel’s largest airstrikes in years targeted an Iranian missile facility.

Reports say Israeli forces infiltrated the site and gathered key intelligence.

According to Middle East researcher Eva Koulouriotis, special Israeli forces reportedly infiltrated an Iranian missile facility near Masyaf, gathered intelligence, and possibly extracted engineers from the site.

The facility belongs to “Institute 4000” – within “Department 4” of the Syrian Scientific Studies and Research Center (SSRC), which deals with various projects for missile development and precision, including the upgrading of “Fateh 110” missiles produced in Iran for Hezbollah.

With the help of Iran (IRGC), the center was relocated from Damascus to Masyaf, where they could also upgrade existing missiles.

2 of the production branches relocated to Masyaf are Branch 702, which deals with solid fuel production, and Branch 350, which deals with the production of short- and medium-range rockets. Recently, two complexes were identified in the Masyaf area intended to support Project 991, where improved Scud missiles are developed, and Projects 794 and 111, related to the development of new surface-to-air missiles and the precision of Syrian Fateh-110 missiles known as “M-600.”

According to the report, Israeli special forces infiltrated the facility, the raid lasted about an hour, during which the forces entered that facility, seized important documents and then trapped it inside with explosives and fled after its destruction,” the report claims.

Footage suggests Israel may have used “Delilah” cruise missiles and possibly loitering munitions, like “Harop” or “Harpy” drones, in the strikes.

In August 2018, Dr. Aziz Asbar was assassinated in a car explosion near the agency’s facilities in Masyaf, while he headed “Department 4” of the SSRC, a department responsible in Syria for all ballistic missile and rocket development programs.

Reports in the Syrian opposition media that Thursday evening, special forces from the IDF carried out a special operation against a military facility belonging to the IRGC, six kilometers southwest of the Syrian city of Masyaf.

The operation began with an air strike targeting a number of roads leading to the military facility, in addition to a headquarters affiliated with the Syrian military security and the facility’s security points. Then, Israeli military helicopters carrying Israeli special forces moved towards the facility, supported by combat helicopters and drones, to prevent any forces from the Assad regime from reaching the area, reported Amir Tsarfait on his Telegram channel.

The operation lasted for about an hour, during which the Israeli special forces were able to enter the facility, withdraw important equipment and documents, mine the facility from the inside, then destroy it and withdraw under air cover through fire belts surrounding the site, to prevent any air movements by Assad’s warplanes.

The targeted facility is directly affiliated with the IRGC and is responsible for developing ballistic missiles and drones and provides logistical support to the Hezbollah militia in Lebanon. The facility has been operating for more than ten years and was subjected to Israeli air strikes last year.

This special operation in Syria is considered an important development in the recently escalating scene in the Middle East. It is certain that what happened in Masyaf will become more clear in detail as the days pass and may be an indication of the imminence of a new escalation, whether on the Syrian or Lebanese arena.

Israeli Commandos Raided Syrian Base:* Syrian media reports that over the course of the past week, in addition to bombing Syrian army positions, Israeli soldiers descended by helicopter into a Syrian missile base.

In the ensuing firefight, Syrian, Iranian, and Russian personnel were killed. The report claims that Israel captured Iranian military advisors and Syrian documents and digital storage before demolishing large portions of the missiles stored in the base.

Israel has not commented on the report, reported Israeli Live News.
