Navah Porat is a painter, sculptor, master printer and graphic designer, an accomplished curator and always an artist.
The body and specifically the female body has been a major theme in her work, explored in different techniques and over a period of 30 years. She has repeatedly challenged herself as an artist using different media, exploring the cultural, iconic and historic imagery epitomizing the female body. Her women are every woman.
The most recent works are naïve styled studies of her “ladies”, a myriad of characters: sad, happy, defiant, sexual and motherly in a decorative and aesthetic language she has mastered. Beautifully drawn images of her women are then dressed in colored paper and textured patterns, highlighted by a mosaic of symbols and cultural imagery. The paintings are lovely colorful decorative renditions of women, healthy, full bodied, proud and positive.
Porat’s women have strong legs and big feet. They represent the modern woman, grounded in today’s understanding that beauty comes in all forms, shapes and color, and should be acknowledged and celebrated.
The fluid and accurate drawing skills, evident in her naïve paintings, are even more exciting in her paintings and etchings. Here we encounter the depth of her emotional intelligence and perceptive eye for detail. The women here are not characters decorated and aesthetically pleasing, rather more emotive and challenging. Here too the strong legs and big feet are a recurring motif as we encounter her talent for color, composition, and drawing. Her lines are alive and vibrant.
Porat is a master printer and in the selected prints and etchings in the exhibition we encounter her command of technique and line drawing. Here we are at the essence of her body of work, sensitive and appealing. Navah has been creating her women for a few decades and they have transformed themselves in various techniques, styles and media. Her women are here and now, proud, commanding, evolving with strong legs and big feet.
