Israeli Defense Forces suffered a major loss in Gaza today as a Hamas projectile hit a captured ammunition collection point and exploded, collapsing structures and killing 22 servicemen. 2 others were killed in the territory in an unrelated incident.

Statements from Israeli leadership are below.

*Statement by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu*

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, this morning (Tuesday, 23 January 2024) [translated from Hebrew]:

“Yesterday we experienced one of the most difficult days since the outbreak of the war.

I would like to stand by the dear families of our heroic fighters who fell on the battlefield. I know that for these families, their lives will change forever.

I mourn our heroic fallen soldiers. I embrace the families in their hour of sorrow and we all pray for the well-being of those who were wounded.

The IDF has opened an inquiry into the tragedy. We must learn the necessary lessons and do everything to safeguard the lives of our fighters. On behalf of our heroes, for our very lives, we will not stop fighting until total victory.”

*Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu: “While we bow our heads in memory of our fallen, we are not relenting – even for a moment – in striving for the goal that has no alternative – achieving total victory.”*

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, Defense Minister Yoav Gallant and Minister Benny Gantz, today (Tuesday, 23 January 2024), at Ramat Korazim, issued statements at the start of the meeting between the members of the War Cabinet and northern local and regional council heads.

Prime Minister Netanyahu [translated from Hebrew]:

“Yesterday was one of the most difficult days since the outbreak of the war. We lost 24 of our best heroic sons who fell in defense of the homeland. Together with the citizens of Israel, I grieve for each one of them. I embrace the families, whose lives have changed forever. From here we send from here prayers for the well-being of our wounded. The IDF is carrying out a thorough inquiry into the tragedy; we must learn the lessons and do everything for the well-being of our soldiers.

We are in the midst of a war, the justification of which is without parallel. In this war there have been great achievements, including today, in completing the encirclement of Khan Yunis, but there have also been very heavy costs.

While we bow our heads in memory of our fallen, we are not relenting – even for a moment – in striving for the goal that has no alternative – achieving total victory. Together we will fight – and together we will win.”

[Defense Minister Gallant’s and Minister Gantz’s remarks will be issued later.]
