The Commander in Chief of the Israeli Navy, Vice Admiral Eli Sharvit, disclosed earlier today that the newest submarine in the Israeli Navy will be named INS “Dragon” (Hebrew: Drakon), in memory of the Israeli submarine the INS “Dakar” that was lost in the Mediterranean with all souls in 1968. The naming process took five years to complete and in fact one of the names considered was indeed “Dakar”, but this idea was abandoned out of respect for the wishes of family members of those who lost their lives on the ill-fated submarine.
