Locked inside for time on end, those first instants upon leaving lockdown form the essence for her current body of work. At Ronny Almagor’s new solo exhibition, “Opening of the Bathing Season”, Almagore explores the exciting moments of leaving lockdown and her dive into the urban nature of her city, Tel Aviv.
Urban space being the main feature in Almagor’s oeuvre, the exhibition presents oil paintings on canvases of varying sizes, depicting the movements in town after the end of lockdown. Among the works on display are animals who are free and unfettered, urban vegetation, and new habits created during the lapse of time of quarantine, such as picnics and the enjoyment of open air as residents rest on benches.
Characterized by an optimistic dream-like colorfulness, the exhibition aspires to express the positive, exciting, and almost enchanted impressions that result from going to town.
In her paintings, Almagor investigates the properties of painting as a medium in itself, both as a two-dimensional platform and as an expanse striving to create a measure of depth. The process of her work is marked by a playfulness which turns into an assortment of “editing activities,” forming a connection between imagery and the composition of new constellations on the fabric.
Almagore’s process approaches the relation between “background” and “image”, as well as the interaction that takes place at the meeting point of the observer and the painting. The exhibition “Opening of the Bathing Season” is named after one of the works on display which reveals just exactly the same playfulness as seen across the exhibition, and which epitomizes the works of the artist.
Almagor, born in 1990, is a painter who lives and works in Tel Aviv and is a 2018 B.F.A Fine-Art graduate of the Bezalel Academy of Art and Design in Jerusalem. With the current exhibition being her third solo show, her works are found in various private collections across Israel.
She exhibited at a number of group exhibitions including one at the Discount Bank Tower in Tel Aviv (2019) and The Artists’ House, Rishon LeTzion (2019). Her first solo exhibition, “Point of View”, was displayed at Ben Ami Gallery, Tel Aviv (2019), and her second solo exhibition, “Phillide”, was shown at Tova Osman Art Gallery, Tel Aviv (2020).
