The political undercurrents in Israeli society are rising to the surface as the Gaza peace deal is still in force, according to the Trump administration. The issue of military service has long been a flash point between orthodox and secular Jews in The Jewish State.

Massive crowds at Ultra-Orthodox Jews (Haredim) protested today against military conscription in Jerusalem, and the arrest of draft dodgers. A 15-year-old boy fell from a high-rise near the central bus station and was pronounced dead at the Jerusalem Haredi protest.

The Netanyahu government is under pressure from all sides as the Trump administration forces Turkey into the process, against the Prime Minister’s wishes.

A U.S. official said despite Israel’s position, the U.S. wants Türkiye involved in the Gaza force.

“The Turks were very helpful in getting the Gaza deal, and Netanyahu’s bashing of Türkiye has been very counterproductive,” said Barak Ravid.

Netanyahu is also facing pressure from Orthodox ministers who are threatening to leave the government if the Gaza deal goes forward as planned. Netanyahu is also still on trial for corruption.

Societal divisions that were out in the open prior to the Gaza war are now showing themselves to still be impactful.
