“Discovering America,” A Zionist Connection With 1920s New York, A Tel Aviv Exhibition

Following Bokobza’s attention to Rubin’s ‘American connection’ during the 1920s, the exhibition also displays four of Rubin’s American paintings created between the 1920s and the 1930s -works that largely remained less familiar than his more celebrated Eretz-Israeli oeuvre.

A new exhibition at Reuven’s House, 14 Bialik Street, Tel Aviv…

At the center of the new exhibition at the Rubin Museum, “Discovering America,” is a video animation titled “Following Rubin” in which Eliahu Eric Bokobza takes Rubin back to the New York of the 1920s.

The visual dictionary of the nascent Zionist endeavor, of which Rubin was one of the creators, his biography, as well as his sources of inspiration embedded in the trends of the day, both in Palestine and in America, all work to form the backdrop to Bokobza’s animation.

In the style of a silent movie, this animation work is seemingly childish, naïve, yet at the same time ironic.

Other highlights of the show include a “map room” which contains a series of works on old maps of Palestine on which Bokobza projects his own ‘story’ as well as self portraits created specifically for the exhibition which reflect his dialogue with Rubin.

Following Bokobza’s attention to Rubin’s ‘American connection’ during the 1920s, the exhibition also displays four of Rubin’s American paintings created between the 1920s and the 1930s -works that largely remained less familiar than his more celebrated Eretz-Israeli oeuvre.
