Prime Minister Netanyahu has tweeted this afternoon following unofficial announcements in the Israeli media earlier in the day that Israel will be joining the US, Canada, and a number of Western European countries in declaring Juan Guaido as the legitimate interim president of Venezuela and withdrawing recognition of the embattled dictator Maduro. While this is not widely known, Israel has had very close ties with Venezuela dating back to the 1970s, when it helped the country develop much of its oil refining capacity. Maduro’s socialist regime, however, was ardently anti-Israeli, aligning itself with other pariah states such as Iran and Russia.
