What Are You Waiting For?

When two articles appear in the same newspaper, on the same day – both highlighting the disturbing trend of Jews being targeted in their countries, the question that begs to be asked is, “What are you waiting for? Until it’s too late to make your way to the land established as a safe haven for Jews?”

The two countries, undoubtedly amongst others, where this is happening are Canada and the U.S., countries which have been committed, or so they say, to the inclusion and well-being of all of their citizens.  Yet, the inclusion of others, namely immigrants, many of whom are Jew-haters, has inevitably placed the Jewish community in peril as attacks have become commonplace.

“Over the past year, there has been an unprecedented increase in anti-Semitic attacks and hate crimes against Jews in the United States,” stated an article entitled, “BLM’s Racist Agenda,” (JPost, 8/4/22) And while all this is going on, the article goes on to say, “there is a major disconnect in the government’s threat assessment and attacks that are actually occurring in the Jewish community.”

Therein lies the dilemma!  How can America’s Jews feel any sense of safety and assurance if their own government is not fully aware or cognizant of the threat which faces them each day?  Just over the past year, New York, probably the largest Jewish populated city in the entire U.S., has seen almost a 40% increase in violent crime and a “reported 300% increase in anti-Semitic attacks committed by Blacks against the Jewish community.” Yet we don’t hear too much about what the city is doing in order to combat these vicious attacks!

Surprisingly, none of this is new.  Anti-Semitic crimes have been, significantly, on the rise since 2015, as BLM (Black Lives Matter) has been pushing the appalling and fallacious narrative that all Whites, including Jews, are racist. So, this ends up being a double whammy for Jews, who are already a minority with an all-too familiar history of persecution, because now their color also works against them.

In Canada, as per the second article, “Jewish Canadians remain the most targeted religious minority for hate crimes, and second overall, according to Canada’s national statistical agency.” (Jews are most targeted religious minority in Canada, JPost, 8/2/22)

The increase cited in Jewish crimes reached 47% since 2020 and a whopping 59% over the last two years, reflecting “1.3 people out of every 1,000 members of Canada’s Jewish community reporting being the target of a hate crime in 2021.”

Of course, Canada and the U.S. are not anomalies when it comes to anti-Semitic incidents being on the rise.  Just over the last few years, similar incidents have occurred in many countries throughout the world.  In fact, the ADL (Anti-Defamation League) has noted, through their global survey that 18 countries have pervasive anti-Semitic attitudes.  They cite, “About one in four Europeans polled harbor pernicious and pervasive attitudes toward Jews.” (www.adl.org, 11/15/19) Their survey went on to state that, “In the Eastern and Central European countries surveyed, the trope of ‘Jewish power’ in business and the ‘dual loyalty’ canard are especially widespread, and many people in those countries also believe that Jews still talk too much about the Holocaust.”

With one out of every four European residents falling into that category of maliciously stereotyping Jews, one justifiably wonders what kind of future remains for the Jews of Europe, and with the U.S. and Canada not far behind, does it make any sense for Jews living there to believe that their children and grandchildren have a bright and promising future in a country that is unaware of the daily threats which are happening within their Jewish communities?

As all this continues, Israel, the one bastion of hope and safety for Jews throughout the world, is steadily increasing in stature, with advanced technology of every type and increased economic opportunity, making it a very appealing choice for educated and skilled immigrants who are able to see the handwriting on the wall and come to the conclusion that their respective diaspora countries are no longer a sure bet.

Israel, likewise, needs to internalize the very real and present danger which is plaguing the global Jewish community.  There needs to be an organized and thoughtful plan in place to incentivize the massive move that each family would undertake, because there is nothing simple about it.  Between learning a new language, adopting a new culture and recreating a new life, it is, without question, one of the greatest challenges that exists.  So, it is no wonder that there is great hesitation in making the move.  Yet, when one’s life is being threatened, there must be a renewed consideration of whether or not it remains prudent or wise to opt for the less difficult road, because, in the end, it may be discovered to be the road with many more pitfalls and even dead ends.

Having made the move, nearly 30 years ago, and coming at what seemed to be a very inopportune time, just five weeks after the death of my husband, I can honestly say that it wasn’t always a cake walk, but it has always been rewarding in terms of feeling safe and secure as well as being able to fully embrace an identity which is of great importance to me. From that aspect, anyone who chooses to come here will not regret the massive effort!

There is no question that the looming threat of anti-Jewish sentiment is being felt throughout the world, and so before it is too late or there is yet another shut-down of Ben Gurion Airport, due to another pandemic (not beyond the realm of possibility), think long and hard about where your future, as a Jew, lies – in nations which cannot protect you or themselves, for that matter.

In the heart of the Middle-East, lines one country which was established as a refuge and homeland of the Chosen People – a beacon of hope and continuity for those who needn’t live as a minority in a host country.  Many of us are ready to welcome you to your rightful home!

So, really… what are you waiting for???

“ How can America’s Jews feel any sense of safety and assurance if their own government is not fully aware or cognizant of the threat which faces them each day? ”

They VOTED for that Govt. And half of Israel votes for far left insanity as well. At least in the U.S. those of us NOT leftist can be armed, where if we make aliyah as older adults we are unarmed.
